What to Expect from a DEXA Scan at Physique Science

At Physique Science, we use advanced DEXA scan technology to give you a clear, detailed understanding of your body composition so you can make more informed decisions about your training, nutrition, and health.
DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) is a state-of-the-art scanning method that provides a full-body analysis of both soft and hard tissue. Your scan will deliver key insights including body fat percentage, total muscle mass, bone health, and visceral adipose tissue (VAT)—a measure of internal fat linked to increased risk of conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers.
Before your scan, you’ll complete a short online consent form, which is a Queensland health requirement due to the minimal radiation exposure involved. The dose is very low—less than one-tenth of a standard chest X-ray—and we recommend no more than six scans per year.
On the day of your appointment, one of our accredited dietitians will guide you through the process. You may be asked to remove any clothing with metal (such as zips or buttons), and your height and weight will be recorded before the scan begins.
The scan itself takes just three minutes. To ensure accuracy and consistency, we use positioning supports to keep you still and aligned—one of the key ways we deliver highly reliable results over time.
But the scan is only the beginning. Your results are available immediately, and your dietitian will walk you through your data, explaining where you sit across key health ranges and what it means for your goals. You’ll also receive practical guidance on how to improve your results through nutrition and training.
