CONCERNED ABOUT
BONE STRENGTH
OR FRACTURE RISK?

Bone Density Scans at The BMD Clinic

A bulk-billed BMD scan can help assess your bone density and identify your risk early.

A bone density scan (BMD) is a simple, non-invasive and painless exam to measure bone mass, using a low dose X-ray to detect signs of bone thinning and mineral loss.

🔸 A doctor’s referral is required for this scan. Available for eligible patients, including those over 70 or with certain medical conditions.

🔸 A BMD scan requires little preparation. You may eat normally and take medications as prescribed by your doctor the morning of your test (except calcium supplements on the morning of the test).

🔸 You can book an appointment online, or email us and we can answer your questions or help you book in.

The BMD Clinic at Physique Science is open for bone density scans from 10:30am to 5pm Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. Other times at request.

The BMD Clinic Patient FAQs

Is the bone density scan bulk billed at The BMD Clinic by Physique Science?

At The BMD Clinic by Physique Science, bone density scans are bulk billed for patients aged 70 and over who hold a valid pensioner concession card. Patients aged 70+ without a concession card will incur a small gap fee of $28.45.

For patients under 70, a Medicare rebate may apply if you have certain medical conditions such as minimal trauma fractures, early menopause, chronic liver or kidney disease, or rheumatoid arthritis. In these cases, a small gap fee of $28.45 applies every 12 to 24 months. Please consult your GP to confirm eligibility.

What is the cost of a bone density scan if I’m not eligible for Medicare?

If you do not meet the eligibility criteria, the cost of a bone density (BMD) scan at The BMD Clinic by Physique Science is $130.

Do I need a referral for a bone density (BMD) scan?

Yes, all patients require a valid GP referral to book a BMD scan at The BMD Clinic by Physique Science. Referrals are not required for our DEXA scan service.

Why should I get a bone density scan if I’ve never broken a bone?

Low bone density and osteoporosis often develop without symptoms. A bone density scan is the only reliable way to assess your bone health before a fracture occurs.

Why is osteoporosis known as a “silent disease”?

Osteoporosis is often called the “silent disease” because bone loss occurs without noticeable symptoms. Many people are unaware they have it until a fracture happens or it is detected through a bone density scan.

Is radiation from a bone density scan safe?

Yes, bone density scans are extremely safe. The radiation exposure is very low—about half the amount of natural background radiation you receive in everyday life.

Does a bone density scan hurt and how long does it take?

A BMD scan is quick, painless, and non-invasive. The procedure typically takes around two minutes to scan both the hip and spine.

Do I need to remove clothing for the scan?

No, you can remain fully clothed during your scan. However, it’s recommended to avoid clothing with metal components such as zippers, belts, buckles, or underwire bras, as these may affect the results.

Can I have a bone density scan if I have a pacemaker?

Yes, bone density scans are safe for patients with pacemakers and will not interfere with the device or the scan results.

Can I have a scan if I’ve had a lumbar fusion?

Yes. At The BMD Clinic by Physique Science, we require at least two vertebrae to assess the lumbar spine. If this isn’t possible, an alternative site such as the non-dominant wrist will be scanned.

Can I have a scan if I’ve had both hips replaced?
Yes. In this case, we will assess your lumbar spine and may also scan the non-dominant wrist to obtain accurate results.
